Game Night at Here Be Books - Saturday, Jan 3, 2009, 6 pm to ???

Filed under: Game Night — Tags: — tina @ 4:36 pm

Come join us for Game Night at Here Be Books. Make new friends, socialize and have some fun. You can learn a new game or play an old favorite; either way you’re sure to have a good time.

When: Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 6 p.m.

Where: Here Be Books at 4650 Ladson Road, Suite I, Summerville, SC [map]

Requests to Play

We’ve had requests for players to play:

  • Pinochle
  • Scrabble
  • Killer Bunnies
  • Euchre

I’m certain we’ll be playing other games, too!

New Games Just Arrived and Waiting Eagerly to Be Played

We’ve recently received a whole stack of demo games including most of the Ticket to Ride line of games by Days of Wonder, lots of stuff by Looney Labs and some great games by Z-Man Games.   We’ll certainly have no shortage of stuff to play - not that we ever do have a shortage of games. Chairs, however… we have run out of. :-)

What kinds of games do we play?

All kinds, including: group games, card games, board games, dice, strategy games, you name it. Examples include:

  • Apples to Apples
  • Bohnanza
  • Canasta
  • Citadels
  • Cranium
  • Euchre
  • Farkle
  • Hearts
  • Last Night on Earth
  • Pinochle
  • Pirate’s Cove
  • Scrabble
  • Spades
  • Transamerica
  • Tsuro
  • Unexploded Cow
  • Zooloretto

… and lots more! If you have a favorite game you’d like to play, bring it with you.

You don’t have to know a game to play it: we’ll teach you.  I think I’ve learned at least one new game at every Game Night.  The object is to have fun. We could all use a little more fun in our lives.  Best of all, it’s FREE!

What to Bring

Bring a folding chair if you have one. Don’t worry if you don’t, just bring yourself.  Drinks and snacks are available for purchase at the store or you can bring your own. Feel free to bring any games you might want to play, too.

Book Signing: The History of Lincolnville, SC - Sat., December 6, 1 pm to 3 pm

Filed under: Book Signings — Tags: — tina @ 5:10 pm

Christine W. Hampton and Rosalee W. Washington will be on hand Saturday, December 6 from 1 pm to 3 pm to sign copies of their book, The History of Lincolnville, South Carolina.

About the Book

A place of refuge for former slaves was founded in 1867 just one mile outside of Summerville: Lincolnville, South Carolina.  Here former slaves built homes, schools, and churches to provide them strength and comfort.  Despite many challenges, the town has survived more than 150 years and has produced many remarkable individuals who have received acclaim for their accomplishments throughout the United States.

This history, lovingly compiled and written by two native daughters of Lincolnville, traces all aspects of the town and provides details never before recorded. It is an important addition to Lowcountry and South Carolina history.

How To Talk Like a Seafarin’ Hearty Available Soon at Here Be Books

Tis yer pirate speech a wee bit rusty? Hav’ ye nerespoken like a sea dog before? Avast! We be havin’ some help fer ye. It be our FREE guide: How to Talk Like a Seafarin’ Hearty.  Available soon exclusively at Here Be Books.

Advantages of Talkin’ Like an Ol’ Sea Dog for a Day

Here’s some advice from syndicated columnist Dave Barry that will help ye see the advantages of talkin’ like an ol’ sea dog for a day:

To prepare for Talk Like a Pirate Day, you should practice incorporating pirate terminology into your everyday speech. For example, let’s consider a typical conversation between two co-workers in a business office:

BOB: Hi. Mary.

MARY: Hi, Bob. Have you had a chance to look at the Fennerman contract?

BOB: Yes, and I have some suggestions.

MARY: OK, I’ll review them.

Now let’s see how this same conversation would sound on Talk Like a Pirate Day:

BOB: Avast, me beauty.

MARY: Avast, Bob. Is that a yardarm in your doubloons, or are you just glad to see me?

BOB: You are giving me the desire to haul some keel.

MARY: Arrrrr.

As you can see, talking like a pirate will infuse your everyday conversations with romance and danger. So join the movement! On Sept. 19, do not answer the phone with ”hello.” Answer the phone with ”Ahoy me hearty!” If the caller objects that he is not a hearty, inform him that he is a scurvy dog (or, if the caller is female, a scurvy female dog) who will be walking the plank off the poop deck and winding up in Davy Jones’ locker, sleeping with the fishes…
