Well, it was definitely an adventure. The readers - Peggy Rogers, Rachael Page, April McDevitt, and me (Tina McDuffie) - were all troopers. We set up under a beautiful tree, it made a lovely backdrop, but were a little too close to the stage. During our first reading of The Wolf, Miss Summerville began singing a song in the stage area, but we kept on reading, pitching our voices a little louder. Then the Fun Bus got on the bandwagon, adding shrilling ice-cream truck music to the cacophony, still we kept on reading. Many thanks to our kind and patient audience who kept on listening throughout it all.
Eventually things quieted down and we read several other stories including How I Became a Pirate and The Little Engine That Could. We decided to try The Wolf again. Shortly after we began our reading, another singer - nice voice, great songs - began his own show on the stage: we kept on reading. A wind came up, swooshing buckets of leaves in on us. Brushing the leaves off our books, we kept on reading. Then the wind, like the wolf in our story, started huffing and puffing and tried to blow our tent down - actually more up. Thankfully Peggy and I were able to each grab hold of a pole - while we kept on reading - and hang on ’til the The End. When we finished, Peggy was no longer under the canopy: the whole tent had moved over three feet while we were reading! Many, many thanks to Peggy, Rachael, and April for being such troopers. Also to Frances for providing backup and Max for transporting the equipment and helping me set up. And of course, to all of our audiences, for listening through it all.
