New Book Club Forming. Come Join the Fun!

Filed under: Book Club — Tags: — tina @ 1:40 pm

We recently had a request by Jason, one of our customers, to start a book club. I’d been kicking the idea around for awhile, so quickly agreed.

Time and Place

Here Be Books
3rd Wednesday of each month at 6:00 pm

Theme Still Under Consideration

Jason, Rachael and I, the only 3 members so far, have discussed the following themes/names:

  • Eclectic Reader’s Book (ERB) Club: anything goes.
  • Movie and a Book (MAB or MAAB) Club: we watch a movie, then read the book it was based on, or vice-versa. This would cover all sorts of genres, from historical to sci-fi to thrillers…
  • Any ____ Genre (I’m trying to get Arrgh or Arr or Arrg - you know, to go with the bookstore’s theme)

Any ideas? Clearly we’re going for an eclectic selection of books from all genres, including: sci fi/fantasy, general fiction, mystery, thriller, historical, etc.

Interested in joining? Give us a call (Tina or Rachael) at Here Be Books. (843) 695-1498. You can also register for an account and post a comment to this blog post as well to share your ideas.

  1. I was thinking “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel for the book club. After all, everyone loves pie.

Of course, I’ve been known to be wrong a time or two or, really, more often than not.

  2. Love pie. Lattice topped apple or peach especially.

Still haven’t figured a way to eat books.

Tastes a little like cardboard every time.

Not crazy on Life of Pi - not enough to read it a second time, anyway. I’d be willing to read something close to that, genre-wise, anyway - something that would promote some thought, discussion, etc. Makes for good group reading.

  3. The book club launched this past Wednesday with much fanfare, balloon monkeys, and gnashing of teeth as Tina announced that the club was meant to start in June. Needless to say that turned it into a very quick meeting and caused the untimely demise of one aforementioned balloon monkey. After unballing myself from the fetal position from Tina dropping the “June” bomb and laying down my mad “puppy dog eyes” skills, the other two members of the Club Which Is Not Named succumbed to my overwhelming logic and reason and agreed to read a book for May. And there was much rejoicing. From there the hard work started. Club names were tossed about; themes were argued over; book titles flew around the air exactly like a cinder block wouldn’t; and tears were shed. Overall we came through it with all the poise and grace of a puppy balancing on a beach ball. We decided to read “Stranger in a Strange Land” by Robert A. Heinlein as our May book of the month. So grab a copy (the original uncut if you can find it) and join us in June to discuss the mystery, wonder, and excitement that is “Stranger in a Strange Land.” We promise something exciting at next month’s meeting, so be sure to join us for tasty beverage refreshments and rich pie goodness. Oh, and we’ll talk about the book…maybe pick a name and theme…actual book club stuff.

Tina: Now see why I’m not the one you want writing these blog messages???

*No balloon monkeys were harmed in the typing of this comment. However many English majors were cast into a state of catatonic shock. My apologies to their friends and family.*

  4. Since I’m such a wonderful guy, I’m willing to loan out my copy to anyone that wants to read it. I have the uncut version. My only stipulation is that you have to come to this month’s meeting to discuss the book. I know. I drive a hard bargain.

  5. Well, we still don’t have a name, but we did finish our first book! Yeah! Now we just need more members.
